800+ kg of Plastic Removed from Socotra

More Than 800kg of Plastic Collected: Traveling Socotra’s Ongoing Environmental Commitment

At Traveling Socotra, protecting the island’s extraordinary natural environment is at the core of everything we do. As part of our long‑term commitment to sustainable travel in Socotra, our Plastic Collection Initiative continues to grow with the help of local communities, international visitors, and our dedicated team on the ground.

Since the start of the initiative, more than 800 kilograms of plastic waste have been collected across Socotra Island. These clean‑up campaigns are designed not only to remove harmful waste from fragile ecosystems but also to raise awareness about responsible tourism and environmental stewardship in one of the world’s most unique biodiversity hotspots.

2025–2026 Season Progress

The current 2025–2026 season has already resulted in nearly 300 kilograms of plastic waste collected from beaches, lagoons, and protected coastal areas across the island. These efforts are carried out regularly by the Traveling Socotra team together with local communities and travelers visiting Socotra.

Rather than a single large event, our initiative consists of many smaller clean‑up actions carried out during trips and excursions. Guests often join our guides in collecting plastic along beaches and coastal trails, turning every journey into an opportunity to contribute to the protection of Socotra’s fragile ecosystems.

Examples of Recent Clean‑Up Campaigns

Below are several recent examples from this season that illustrate how travelers and our local team work together to reduce plastic pollution:

Sustainable Travel in Socotra: Visitors Making a Real Impact

A unique aspect of the Traveling Socotra Plastic Collection Initiative is the active involvement of travelers visiting the island. Guests joining our tours are encouraged to participate in conservation activities during their trips, helping protect the very landscapes they come to experience.

These activities allow visitors to become part of responsible tourism in Socotra, where travel experiences contribute positively to the environment and local communities.

Why These Locations Are Important for Socotra’s Ecosystem

The beaches and coastal regions where these clean‑ups take place are not only stunning destinations but also environmentally significant areas for Socotra’s biodiversity.

Delisha Sand Beach is part of Socotra’s protected national park zones. Its pristine shoreline and surrounding habitats support coastal ecosystems that are highly sensitive to pollution.

Erisel Beach, located at the far eastern tip of the island, is one of Socotra’s most remote and untouched coastal landscapes. It lies near the meeting point of the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, creating a unique ecological environment that supports seabirds, marine species, and coastal wildlife.

Shoab, on the western side of Socotra, is famous for its dramatic cliffs, rich marine waters, and thriving habitats for dolphins, seabirds, and other marine life. Protecting this area from plastic pollution is essential to preserving both its biodiversity and its reputation as one of the island’s most spectacular natural destinations.

Detwah Lagoon is one of Socotra’s most iconic natural sites and an important marine ecosystem. The lagoon provides habitat for seabirds, marine species, and coastal wildlife, and it plays a vital role in the island’s ecological balance.

Continuing Our Mission to Protect Socotra

Although significant progress has already been made, plastic pollution remains a challenge for many of Socotra’s remote beaches and coastal ecosystems.

Through continued clean‑up initiatives, collaboration with local communities, and participation from environmentally conscious travelers, Traveling Socotra remains committed to promoting sustainable tourism and protecting the island’s fragile ecosystems.

With over 800 kilograms of plastic already removed from the island’s natural environments, every additional clean‑up campaign brings Socotra one step closer to preserving its extraordinary landscapes for future generations.
