At Traveling Socotra, we are passionate about promoting environmental awareness and protecting the island’s unique ecosystems. In partnership with the Socotra Wildlife Society and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), we proudly supported the recent celebration of International Vulture Awareness and Birds of Prey Day. This global event, held on the first Saturday of September each year, brought together local authorities, environmental activists, and community members to highlight the importance of conserving Socotra’s remarkable wildlife, especially its Egyptian Vultures (Neophron percnopterus), which are found here in the largest concentration worldwide.

Environmental Field Trip to Qaria Lagoon

40 participants of officials from the local authorities, community figures as well as environmental  activist and  volunteers and  representatives of Traveling Socotra  joined with members of the Socotra Wildlife Association.  Together, they organized several events to highlight the importance of our Egyptian Vultures Neophron percnopterus, as the largest concentration of Egyptian Vultures Neophron percnopterus in the world are present on Socotra.

Addressing Plastic Waste: A Major Threat

One of the key focuses of this event was plastic pollution, a growing issue on Socotra. Participants discussed how plastic waste poses a serious threat to the island’s biodiversity, especially to birds of prey and their habitats. At Traveling Socotra, we recognize the urgency of tackling this issue and are committed to raising awareness and promoting sustainable practices.

Panel Discussion at Dihmari Marine Reserve

Following the field trip, participants gathered at the Dihmari Marine Reserve for a panel discussion with representatives from the local government and environmental organizations. The discussion centered around the need for stronger environmental protections, sustainable tourism practices, and the enforcement of laws that safeguard Socotra’s ecosystems. The panel produced several key recommendations that will be shared with relevant authorities and NGOs to encourage continued conservation efforts.

Empowering the Community

Through this event, we not only raised awareness but also empowered young people and local tour guides with the knowledge and tools to become stewards of the environment. By educating the community about the threats to Socotra’s birds, particularly Egyptian Vultures, and the broader ecosystem, we are helping to build a future where conservation and sustainable tourism go hand in hand.

We believe that initiatives like these are essential for protecting the island’s natural heritage. By coming together as a community, we can make a meaningful difference for Socotra’s wildlife and ensure that its unique biodiversity continues to thrive.
