Is it safe to travel to Socotra?

When you think of Yemen, it’s probably not in the best light. Due to the civil war and negative reports in the news, mainland Yemen is often seen as a dangerous destination to travel to. Most embassies even have strict travel warnings advising people to stay away.

Socotra, a stunningly unique island 380km off mainland Yemen, doesn’t fit this scary picture at all. In this blog post, we’re diving into why Socotra is totally different from the rest of the country, featuring insights from our local tour operator and co-founder, Ali Yayha, who was born and raised on Socotra and has been organizing tours on the island for many years. We’ll explain what makes this island so special and why it’s actually a safe spot for travelers.

Ali Yaha, Socotra native & travel expert

A brief overview of Yemen’s political history

Our local expert Ali describes the situation as follows: “As it is clear to everyone that Yemen, from the dawn of independence until this moment, has suffered from successive political crises and civil wars over more than five decades. This country, with a strategic location overlooking the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Red Sea, entered into stifling political crises, some of which led to armed conflict between different parties and centres of power and influence across Yemen, whether in the north or south.”

Modern Yemen’s history is full of such conflicts, from the North Yemeni Civil War in the 1960s to the more recent Houthi insurgency. These crises have not only destabilised the country but also caused significant human suffering and economic devastation. Yet, throughout these turbulent times, Socotra has managed to remain an oasis of stability.

Socotra’s isolation: A hidden blessing

Socotra’s safety owes a lot to its unique location and culture. Located about 380 kilometers south of mainland Yemen in the Arabian Sea, the island’s distance has kept it out of the conflicts affecting the rest of the country. As Ali Yahya explains, “Since 1967, Socotra has stayed clear of Yemen’s political crises and civil wars. Its geographical distance and cultural differences have kept it safe.”

This physical separation, along with Socotra’s one-of-a-kind ecosystem and heritage, has allowed the island to develop independently of Yemen’s troubles. This isolation hasn’t just preserved its stunning natural beauty but also maintained a rare sense of peace and security.

The current situation in Yemen and the distinction between North and South Yemen

Ali Yahya further elaborates: “The situation in Gaza has created a new set of unfolding dynamics throughout the region, including in Yemen. That said we have to make a clear distinction. There is north/west Yemen (the mostly Houthi controlled Yemen) and there is south/east Yemen (legitimate government/STC controlled). The latter is internationally recognized, supported entirely by the UAE, Saudi and NATO. The prior is not, and is currently undertaking some bold moves in the Red Sea. South/east Yemen is completely safe and has, for the most part always been. As been mentioned Socotra is completely and utterly removed from all of these situations, both politically, geographically, culturally and ideologically. It has never seen any violence whatsoever, and is completely separated from any problems occurring in western Yemen. Flights are continuing to Socotra twice a week, full of foreigners and nothing even close to sketchy has ever happened. Socotra occupies a different political and security-related chunk of the world then the rest of Yemen, and this is mainly due to its close historic affiliation with the UAE. The UAE, along with Saudi being the one that calls the shots in Yemen and the region now, would never let anything happen to Socotra, nor on it.”

The role of governance and local autonomy

Another key factor in Socotra’s security is its local governance. Since 2013, the island has had its own government, giving it some autonomy to manage its affairs. In early summer 2018, troops from the United Arab Emirates took control of the island amid the broader military conflict in Yemen. This local administration has been crucial in addressing the needs and ensuring the safety of its residents.

Socotra’s governance model emphasizes community involvement and sustainable development, creating a sense of ownership and responsibility among the locals. This approach has been essential in maintaining the island’s overall security and stability, even with external challenges. Local authorities also collaborate with international organizations to promote environmental conservation and sustainable development, making Socotra an even more appealing and safe destination.

Challenges and future prospects

Despite its relative safety and isolation, Socotra isn’t completely immune to outside influences and challenges. The ongoing conflict on the Yemeni mainland has had some indirect effects on the island, like supply chain disruptions and limited access to international aid. There are also worries about potential geopolitical interests that could impact its stability.

However, the resilience of the Socotri people and the island’s unique characteristics make a positive future possible. Continued efforts to promote sustainable development, environmental conservation, and cultural preservation will be crucial in keeping Socotra secure and stable. International support and cooperation can also help the island navigate these challenges and ensure a peaceful and prosperous future.

So, is it safe to visit Socotra?

In short: Yes, it is absolutely safe to visit Socotra. Being part of a country that is often linked with conflict and instability, the island itself stands out, showcasing how geographical isolation and cultural distinction can maintain peace and security.

Its unique biodiversity, rich cultural heritage, and effective governance offer valuable lessons in resilience and sustainability. By continuing to protect and value these qualities, Socotra can remain a safe oasis in the Arabian Sea and show what’s possible when a community is dedicated to peace and preservation.
