How to travel to Socotra: All you need to know for your trip

Planning a journey to Socotra, the incredibly unique island off the coast of Yemen, demands a bit of preparation. We are here to ensure your travel adventure to Socotra is smooth and hassle-free.

Key Requirements: Passport and Visa

First and foremost, traveling to Socotra requires a valid passport and a tourist entry permit (locally called a visa). Your passport should be valid for at least six months on your departure date. The official government fee for a visa is $160 USD. At Traveling Socotra, we will assist you with the visa application process, which will be requested approximately 3 weeks before your trip and issued approximately 1 week before your departure, as the visa is only valid for 30 days.

Flights to Socotra

Currently, direct flights from Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) to Socotra are available through Yemenia Airways. They’re leaving every Tuesday from Jeddah and coming back every Monday and cost $950 per person for a round trip. You can’t book these flights online, so it is easiest to book them through us. Important to note that we are not an airline or airline representatives, we do have a free service to assist you in getting the plane ticket in a fast and convenient manner. Just select the flights in the checkout process, send us the required details and you are good to go.

These flights do sell out quickly, so planning your trip well in advance is essential. Minimum 6 months in advance, ideally 9 months in or more.

Entry Stamps and Future Travel Implications

Some countries – like the USA – have strict entry policies and may refuse entry or impose additional scrutiny if they see a Yemeni stamp in your passport. You can enter Socotra without getting a stamp in your passport itself, but instead you can ask to stamp on a separate sheet. This is quite common in Socotra.

In some countries, it is also possible to apply for a second passport, especially if you are a frequent traveler to countries with conflicting entry requirements. Start by inquiring with the relevant authorities in your country, as this process can be time-consuming and subject to stringent criteria.

All of this at your own responsibility and discretion, of course.

Additional Travel Tips

Due to the absence of public transport or car rental services on the island, a trip to Socotra needs to be booked through a travel agency. Accommodation options are limited, with only one hotel located in the capital.

For your flights to and from Jeddah, we recommend arriving in Jeddah a day before your flight to Socotra and spending the night there, or allowing for a significant buffer time between flights to avoid any potential issues.

Why having a travel insurance is important

Travel insurance is strongly recommended for trips to Socotra due to the island’s limited and infrequent flight connections. Flights operate on a fixed weekly schedule, and cancellations or rescheduling can occur because of weather, operational issues, or airspace restrictions. In such cases, travelers may need to extend their stay or cover additional accommodation and rebooking costs. Travel insurance can help protect you financially in case of flight cancellations, delays, or trip interruptions.

It is also important to have coverage for medical emergencies. Medical facilities on Socotra are limited, and serious cases may require costly evacuation if you are uninsured.

When choosing travel insurance, make sure that Yemen (Socotra) is explicitly covered. Travelers commonly use providers like SafetyWing, IATI or InsureMyTrip (US residents only). We are not affiliate with them.

We strongly recommend securing comprehensive travel insurance that includes flight-related coverage and emergency medical care before traveling to Socotra.
